WHY?
Ethical approval is a fundamental prerequisite for conducting research in the social and behavioral sciences. However, many educational institutions in India lack a formal ethics committee or Institutional Review Board (IRB), making it difficult for scholars to obtain the necessary ethical clearance. Without documented ethical approval, publishing in high-impact international journals becomes a significant challenge which ultimately hinders India’s global representation in social science research. INBER seeks to bridge this gap by offering transparent, timely, and rigorous ethical review services to undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars, independent researchers, and organizations. Our aim is to ensure that their research meets international ethical standards and is well-positioned for successful publication.
Any student (UG/PG), research scholar, independent researcher, or organization may apply for ethical review of their study/project through our Ethical Review Submission Portal, in accordance with our submission guidelines. Once submitted, the study is initially screened by the Chief Reviewer to assess its eligibility under INBER’s review scope (note: INBER does not review clinical, animal, or drug-related studies). If deemed appropriate, the submission is forwarded to one of three review pathways—Exempt, Expedited, or Full Board—based on the level of ethical risk involved. Each submission is reviewed by a minimum of three panel members. Based on their evaluation, the applicant will receive one of the following outcomes: (a) an Ethical Approval Letter from INBER, (b) a request for revisions or additional information, or (c) rejection, if the study fails to meet the required ethical standards.
HOW?
WHO?
The INBER Review Board is structured into multiple panels, each responsible for assessing studies based on the level of potential ethical risk involved. These panels are composed of experts with significant research experience and a deep understanding of internationally recognized ethical standards relevant to their fields — such as the APA guidelines for Psychology, among others.
Within each panel, experts are further grouped into specialized subdivisions based on their domain expertise (e.g., Social Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, etc.). This layered structure ensures that each submission is reviewed by experts with both discipline-specific knowledge and ethical competence, enabling nuanced and context-appropriate evaluations across the behavioral and social sciences.
